Department of Statistics
The Department of Statistics offers an Honours program. Entry to the Honours program is selective, and the number of students accepted into the program each year is limited.
The Program
The Honours program is available to students with a very good academic record, who wish to acquire and develop research skills and enhance their critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, and other advanced skills in their chosen areas of study.
An Honours degree enhances a graduate's employment and career advancement prospects through signalling to employers that the Honours graduate has developed a deeper knowledge base and has acquired and can apply generic skills at a level higher than those typically developed during a normal Bachelors degree. Increasingly, such skills are highly valued by society, including employers in the science profession, the defence industry, business and commerce, and government sector organisations.
An Honours degree also provides wider specific career options. Honours is the usual pathway to a research and teaching career in universities, and to positions in the research arms of professional accounting and financial institutions.
An Honours degree is graded on the basis of the student’s overall academic performance across the program. The Honours degree is awarded at four levels:
First Class
Second Class (Division 1)
Second Class (Division 2) and
Third Class
Entry Requirements
The selective entry requirements for the Honours program normally require students who have completed a Bachelors degree at Macquarie University to have achieved an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.5 overall and 3.0 at 300 level. In addition students should have successfully completed MATH236, STAT371 and STAT378.
Equivalent criteria are determined for students from other universities.
