Description
This unit considers the application of simulation concepts to practical as well as theoretical problems. It emphasises the use of computer simulation as an investigative tool, especially where analytical methods are ineffective. The statistical, computing and practical problems involved are considered. Case studies are presented from a variety of areas, including business processes, manufacturing and mineral exploration.
We introduce computer simulation software (Extend) and applications. As a prerequisite to STAT329: Electronic Commerce this unit contributes to generic skills acquisition in analysis of systems, in experience working with teams and in communication skills using the media of web page presentations and formal reports of statistical findings.
This unit is preliminary to STAT378: Statistical Computing and gives double value with regard to coherent studies, i.e. it counts towards both the major in Statistics and the major in Computing.
