Aims

This unit considers the application of simulation concepts to practical as well as theoretical problems. It emphasises the use of computer simulation as an investigative tool, especially where analytical methods are ineffective. The statistical, computing and practical problems involved are considered. Case studies are considered from a variety of areas.

Three pieces of software will be used extensively:

• the spreadsheet Excel,
• the simulation package Extend,
• and the computation package Matlab.

As a prerequisite to STAT329: Electronic Commerce, this unit contributes to generic skills acquisition in analysis of systems, in experience working with teams and in communication skills using formal reports of statistical findings.

This unit is preliminary to STAT378: Statistical Computing.
